Analysis of the micro-elements of film form from a teen film

Image
Analyse the micro elements (Mise-en-scene, Cinematography, Sound and Editing) of film form in a scene from a film in the teen film genre and discuss how these elements create meaning and conform to genre conventions. The film I chose to use was Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986).  Mise-en-scene This clip is set within a classroom, which is a typical location in teen films. I would guess this scene is to help set the scene for the film. The hair and makeup, as well as the costume is very standard for the era the film is set in, and made in, which is the 1980s. There are very large hairdos such as the one 'Adler' has. You also get the common stereotype from American high-school films of certain people like the 'jock' wearing a varsity jacket. In this scene we don't see many props barring pens which further emphasizes the dull nature of school and that no-one wants to be there. The lighting is fairly standard and appears to be...

Trying Cuts and Transitions

Image
In this task, we were given a list of different types of camera shots and transitions and asked to try and use some of them in a short showreel of sorts. We decided to show someone going into a classroom and doing work.

Montage - Waiting at a bus stop

Image
We were given the task of creating a montage of someone waiting for a bus, over the period of 1 hour. Before we started, we watched famous montages like Rocky and Up to see how they were put together so that the audience knew that a significant length of time had passed.

How cinematography is used to create meaning in The Truman Show

Image
Scene - Good Afternoon, Good Evening and Good Night (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdwuW8n3JYA) Camera shot - Zoom (0:04) Effect created This shot allows the focus to be on Truman, and Truman alone. This is reflected by the fact we later find out he is the star of a television show. It could also have a hidden meaning in that he is at the centre of the shot, and the entire film. Camera shot - Low Angle (0:20) Effect created This shot allows the audience to see his house and the artificial sky. It also allows us to see the difference in height between Truman and Pluto, the dog. This shows that Truman is possibly afraid of dogs since he is trying to keep away from Pluto despite been far bigger. Camera shot  - Aerial Shot (0:29) Effect created This allows the audience to see Truman's neighborhood and how artificial it looks because the houses are similar. Camera shot - Close Up (1:02) Effect created This is used to make Truman's confusion at this light whi...

Individual Response Sheet - The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD What are your expectations of the film? Give reasons for your answers. I am expecting there to be over the top action sequences as it is a superhero film. I am also expecting it to play on the title and have dark themes throughout. Narrative turning points - at what points does the plot change? The first turning point was Bruce returning as Batman after 8 years of hiding. This meant that it wasn't just the police against Bane. The next turn was Bruce escaping from prison, giving Gotham a chance against Bane's reign over the city. The final one was Miranda turning out to be Talia, as opposed to Bane. Memorable moments - what moments in the film stood out for you? Give reasons. One of the moments was the plane crash at the start as it set the tone for the rest of the film. Another was Bane's speech at the stadium, where he revealed that he was going to 'liberate' Gotham by blowing it up. The final one w...

Individual Response Sheet - The Men Who Stare At Goats (2010)

WARNING: POTENTIAL SPOILERS AHEAD What are your expectations of the film? Give reasons for your answers. Based on the title, I am expecting it to be quite funny. I am also expecting over the top dialogue. Narrative turning points - at what points does the plot change? The first turning point was when Lynn and Bob were captured by terrorists. The next one is Bob spotting a goat and following it to a spring in the desert. The final one is Bob and Lynn releasing the goats and prisoners. Memorable moments - what moments in the film stood out for you? Give reasons. The moment where Larry was at the wedding and said it wouldn't last gave the audience of the character before we met him. Another one was where the water had been spiked with LCD and everyone went crazy. Emotional response - what was your emotional response to the film? Did your emotions change? If so where and why? The film was funny throughout, with most of the humour fairly subtle a...
