Analysis of the micro-elements of film form from a teen film

Analyse the micro elements (Mise-en-scene, Cinematography, Sound and Editing) of film form in a scene from a film in the teen film genre and discuss how these elements create meaning and conform to genre conventions.

The film I chose to use was Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986).

Mise-en-scene

This clip is set within a classroom, which is a typical location in teen films. I would guess this scene is to help set the scene for the film. The hair and makeup, as well as the costume is very standard for the era the film is set in, and made in, which is the 1980s. There are very large hairdos such as the one 'Adler' has. You also get the common stereotype from American high-school films of certain people like the 'jock' wearing a varsity jacket.

In this scene we don't see many props barring pens which further emphasizes the dull nature of school and that no-one wants to be there. The lighting is fairly standard and appears to be very artificial, most likely from ceiling lights as there is a large amount of light with no shadows. The expression shown by all the characters is that of a dull one. They don't seem to be enthusiastic about the lesson, teacher included. The teacher appears to be bored of his mundane job, which he has presumably been doing for quite a while and is so uninterested that he repeats 'Bueller?' a lot until a student explains that he is absent. This also highlights another stereotyped character: the talkative girl who gossips a lot. This is proved when she says 'My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with a girl who saw Ferris pass out'.

Cinematography

In this scene, there is almost exclusively close-up shots of the relevant character's face which is possibly used to reflect the simplicity of the scene. I am surprised at the lack of a extreme wide shot or establishing shot which could've been used to emphasize the fact that Ferris isn't there.

Sound

There is mainly dialogue in this scene although there is some ambient sound which appears to be from other classrooms. This is typical is registration though which is possibly which most of the students are silent.

Editing

In this scene, there are only cuts as it is just dialogue between two characters generally. There could have been match-on-action between the teacher and student but this would have been unnecessary for the most part as the teacher had the same reaction on his face throughout, suggesting he didn't change his reaction to what was being said.
